Understanding and Creating Custom Menus in Office 2010

As technology moves forward, so must we.  With Projects to manage and deadlines looming who has time for yet another steep, intimidating learning curve. Thankfully Microsoft understands this. They realize that moving to a totally new menu layout can be counterproductive at first. There are several tools out now to ease your transition into Office 2010. We have listed our favorites below with links for you to access them quickly.

Microsoft created the interactive guide to learning Office 2010 commands so that you easily find the commands you need. You select the program you are working in from the list and are given a 2003 style menu to navigate. Select the command you are looking for from the menu and the Interactive guide shows you where you need to go in the 2010 ribbon. The interactive guides for each office program can be accessed at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/learn-where-menu-and-toolbar-commands-are-in-office-2010-and-related-products-HA101794130.aspx#_Toc268688374.

Another tool Microsoft has created to help learn the new menus are printable lists of the office 2010 commands telling you where you can find each command. These lists are laid out as excel workbooks. Each workbook page is dedicated to one of the dropdown menus normally found in Office 2003. You find the command you are looking for, it gives you which tab, group and location of the command in Office 2010. These workbooks can be downloaded at : http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CL101817133.aspx?CTT=5&origin=HA101794130&AxInstalled=1&c=0 . These are a handy tool to keep near your desk to help you find that pesky command that is now hiding from you. We have included the workbooks to Excel, Word and Outlook as a part of this newsletter.

A great feature that has been added to office 2010 is the ability to create your own ribbons. Creating your own ribbon means that you can always have your most used commands directly in front of you. Instructions to create your own ribbon are located here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/onenote-help/customize-the-ribbon-HA010355697.aspx?CTT=1

Microsoft also has custom built ribbons that can be downloaded. These ribbons were created based on user feedback to Microsoft. Below is the pre-customized ribbon for Microsoft Word 2010

Instructions on downloading and installing these ribbons can be accessed by going to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/download-free-customized-ribbons-HA1018858. Unfortunately, if you have already built a custom ribbon, using the preconfigured ribbon will bump it out. You can however add your own customized ribbons after you have downloaded and added the preconfigured ribbon to your Office 2010 Program

Microsoft has built a great website around the Office 2010 software suite that offers some great tutorials, help pages, as well as a forum where users can post questions and get help from other users.  You can access all of the Office 2010 help and support resources from this web address: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/support-FX101825174.aspx?CTT=97.

Using these resources will help you will become an Office 2010 Power User in no time!
